First Week as House Manager: Hands-On Wins and Lessons in Detail

July 30, 20253 min read

Hey, Life with Justin Stephens community! Justin here, wrapping up the month with a journal entry on my first full week stepping into the house manager role. After sharing my excitement last time and getting inspired by Lisa Thompson's Point of View on scaling home services, this week has been a hands-on adventure. It's gone great so far—I'm loving the shift to manual work, seeing tangible results for my clients (starting with my parents), and picking up valuable lessons on attention to detail. Let's break it down, and I'll connect it to broader themes of personal finance, business growth, and finding joy in the process.

A Great Start: Enjoying the Hands-On Work

From day one, this role has been refreshing. I've spent hours organizing the shops and sheds—sorting tools, labeling shelves, and decluttering years of accumulated stuff. What I love most is working with my hands—there's something satisfying about the physical effort, the sweat, and stepping back to see a transformed space. Unlike staring at a screen all day, this gives immediate results: A chaotic shed turned functional, a overgrown yard now neat and inviting. My parents (my first "clients") are thrilled, and it's motivating to know I'm creating real value that saves them time and hassle.

It's a nice pivot from my usual sales and marketing grind—reminding me that success can come from diverse paths. Plus, it's tying into my fitness goals post-wreck; the manual labor is helping me rebuild strength without feeling like a chore.

Lessons Learned: Attention to Detail and Overcoming Challenges

This week taught me a ton about attention to detail—small things make a big difference. For instance, while organizing the shed, I noticed some shelves were unstable due to poor design. Instead of just stacking items, I reinforced them with brackets for safety and better aesthetics, turning a potential hazard into a polished setup.

These moments highlight problem-solving in action—finding ways to do things a certain way to address design flaws or visual mismatches. It's like business strategy: Spot the issue, adapt, and deliver excellence. Applying this to scaling my side hustle, I'm noting these details for client pitches—emphasizing how my eye for detail prevents future problems and enhances home value.

On the finance side, it's smart too: Efficient organization reduces waste (no more buying duplicate tools), and proper maintenance avoids costly repairs down the line. As I aim to add more clients, these lessons will help me price services fairly while maximizing impact.

Looking Ahead: Building Momentum

Overall, the week has energized me—proving that consistency in a new venture pays off quickly. I'm excited to document more (before/after pics incoming!) and seek those couple extra clients. It's all part of the journey toward financial freedom and work that aligns with my values.
